The University of Hawaii-Manoa named UNM Provost Reed Dasenbrock as a finalist for its vacant chancellor position Feb. 12.

Dasenbrock was nominated for the position by a professor at the university.

He will visit the university Feb. 26 and 27 to meet with faculty, staff and students.

The chancellor functions as a president for that university branch and reports to the president of the University of Hawaii System.

Dasenbrock said the position interested him because he has family in Hawaii, including an aging mother-in-law.

Dasenbrock said nothing about UNM made him want to leave.

"(Hawaii is) probably about the only place in the world that I would consider living other than New Mexico," he said. "It certainly doesn't affect my commitment to the University of New Mexico or to serving the students at UNM."

Terry Yates, associate vice president for research and economic development, said he would hate to see Dasenbrock go.

"He's got a very different style and background," he said. "Certainly, he is among the best, and I very much have enjoyed working with him."

Instability in upper-level administration would be the biggest problem facing UNM if Dasenbrock left, Yates said.

Dasenbrock said he's not hunting for a job.

"This is the only job I am considering, and this is probably the only job that I would be considering," he said. "If I don't get it, I will certainly look forward to working with the new president."

Yates said Dasenbrock understands academic affairs and is very dedicated to his job.

"He's known on a national scene and considered a provost that is seasoned and knows what he's doing," Yates said. "Clearly, it would be a good move for the University of Hawaii with someone of his academic experience and background. I think UNM would be well-served if he decided to stay here."

If chosen, Dasenbrock would probably start at the beginning of the fall semester, he said. He said he is not planning on leaving.

"It's a very strong pool," he said. "There are four strong candidates. I'm not assuming at this point that I'm going."

If he is selected, an interim provost will probably be appointed, and there will be a national search for a replacement, Dasenbrock said.

Dasenbrock came to UNM in 2001 as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was appointed provost in 2005.
