Staff Report
All ITS services, including LoboWeb, WebCT and on-campus Internet, will be down from 9 p.m. May 12 to 11 a.m. May 13.
"We tried to do it at night so it would impact the least amount of people and services," said Rosemary Barrett, technical support analyst. "We know that it affects faculty, staff and students - especially students and faculty, because of the fact we're right at the end of semester."
ITS met with groups that will be affected by the upgrade and decided May 12 would have the least impact, Barrett said.
ITS is getting a power upgrade for almost $1 million that will allow it to host more than twice as many servers, raising the number from 256 to 544.
The upgrade, which starts the last day of finals, is past due, and the department is dealing with technical difficulties, such as a broken circuit breaker, Barrett said.
"It's just been years since we've this kind of a window to a large upgrade," she said. "We already are seeing system failures because of the overheating."
The department will get a new transformer that will be outside of its building to prevent overheating, Barrett said.
If any of the servers crash before the upgrade, it would be trouble for UNM, she said.
There is a 50 percent chance at least one of the servers will crash before May 12, Barrett said.
"If a server crashed today because of heat, the students could be heavily impacted," she said. "We would actually have to
rebuild it, and it could take us hours to bring back the service."
The upgrade will give ITS the ability to provide faster and more reliable services, Barrett said.
It will be a big help because there will be backup servers for all the services, Barrett said.
"The redundancy is going to make it so it's hard to bring things down," she said. "That's definitely a benefit to the students, because then they'll always be able to get their services."
Barrett said ITS has been trying to let people know the services will be down, but it's hard.
"That's always been our problem," she said. "We think we cover everybody, and there's still somebody out there who says, 'I didn't hear about this.'"
