In a tenure that started with controversy and coaching changes, UNM Athletics Director Paul Krebs had some positive news Thursday.

The UNM athletics program will receive its biggest financial boost from a single sponsor, the University announced.

Route 66 Casino Hotel will contribute $2.5 million to UNM in a five-year deal. The sponsorship is the largest individual contribution in the school's athletic history.

UNM President David Schmidly said the announcement was refreshing.

"I can't think of a better one that we've had in a long time," he said. "I know Paul Krebs feels that way. Paul told me normally when we get together in front of the cameras like this, it's not good news. But today, we're going to talk about good news."

With the agreement, Route 66 becomes the exclusive gaming sponsor for the Lobos' athletic department. The deal will begin July 1.

The casino will have exclusive rights to advertising at UNM facilities such as University Stadium and The Pit, as well as promotional opportunities at sporting events throughout the year.

Krebs said the sponsorship will have a positive impact on Lobo athletics.

"Those additional dollars will help us attract and retain outstanding coaches and attract, retain and graduate student athletes," he said. "I think we'll see the benefits of this program as early as this summer and this fall."

Krebs said he doesn't see any issues with a casino sponsoring the program.

He said UNM and Route 66 will work to promote education and positive changes in the community.

"I would say that the gaming industry is a critical part of the economy in our state," Krebs said. "I don't have any concerns about that whatsoever. We're not gambling on intercollegiate athletics. For those reasons among many others, I see absolutely no concern with this."
